Finding Relief: How Chiropractic Care Can Help with Frozen Shoulder and Shoulder Bursitis
/Shoulder pain can be incredibly frustrating—especially when it limits your ability to do even the simplest things like reaching for a cup, putting on a jacket, or brushing your hair. In my chiropractic practice, two of the most common shoulder issues I see are frozen shoulder (adhesive capsulitis) and shoulder bursitis. While they’re different conditions, both can be painful, restrictive, and, if not managed properly, long-lasting.
Let me explain what these conditions are and how chiropractic care can play a powerful role in recovery.
What Is Frozen Shoulder?
Frozen shoulder, or adhesive capsulitis, is a condition where the connective tissue capsule surrounding the shoulder joint becomes thickened and tight, leading to pain and a significant loss of motion. It typically develops slowly, and progresses through three stages:
Freezing – Gradual onset of pain with increasing stiffness.
Frozen – Pain may improve slightly, but the stiffness worsens.
Thawing – Range of motion slowly begins to return.
The full cycle can take 12–24 months if left untreated. That’s a long time to live with restricted movement and discomfort.
What About Shoulder Bursitis?
Bursitis is inflammation of the bursa, a small fluid-filled sac that cushions the shoulder joint. It can be caused by overuse, injury, or poor posture, and typically presents as a deep, aching pain that gets worse with movement or pressure. Unlike frozen shoulder, bursitis tends to respond quickly with the right care—but ignoring it can lead to complications or recurrence.
Case Example: Helen’s Frozen Shoulder Journey
Helen, a 56-year-old teacher, came to me after months of worsening shoulder pain. She couldn’t lift her arm above shoulder height, was waking at night from the discomfort, and had been told by her GP that she might just need to “wait it out.” That didn’t sit well with her—and rightly so.
Through careful assessment, I diagnosed her with early-stage frozen shoulder. We implemented a chiropractic plan that included:
Gentle shoulder mobilisations
Thoracic spine adjustments to improve upper body mobility
Myofascial release to address tight shoulder and chest muscles
A graded home exercise program to support mobility and healing
Within 6 weeks, Helen had significantly reduced pain and improved her range of motion by 40%. She still had a road ahead, but her shoulder was no longer “frozen” in place—and more importantly, she felt in control of her recovery.
How Chiropractic Can Help
The shoulder is a complex joint that relies on proper movement not only from the shoulder itself but also from the spine and rib cage. When these areas are restricted, it can worsen shoulder dysfunction or slow recovery.
Here’s how chiropractic treatment supports shoulder healing:
Improves joint mechanics – Adjusting the spine and shoulder joints restores proper movement patterns.
Reduces muscle tension – Soft tissue techniques relieve guarding and inflammation.
Enhances blood flow and healing – Mobilisation and manual therapy improve circulation to affected tissues.
Guides movement rehab – Chiropractors provide tailored exercises that gently restore function without overloading the joint.
And it’s not just anecdotal—research backs it up. A 2020 study in the Journal of Back and Musculoskeletal Rehabilitation found that manual therapy, when combined with exercise, significantly improved pain and range of motion in patients with adhesive capsulitis compared to exercise alone (Düzgün et al., 2020). That means that hands-on care really does make a difference.
The Importance of Early Management
With frozen shoulder, time matters. The longer the shoulder is immobile, the more adhesions can form—and the longer it can take to regain movement. With bursitis, ignoring symptoms can lead to chronic pain or compensatory injuries elsewhere (like the neck or opposite shoulder).
If you’re experiencing shoulder stiffness, pain with overhead motion, or limited range of motion, don’t wait for it to get worse. Early diagnosis and a proactive care plan can change the entire trajectory of your healing.
Let’s Work Together
Shoulder pain doesn’t have to be something you just “put up with.” At my practice, I take a whole-body approach to shoulder care—supporting healing, restoring function, and helping you move freely again.
If you’re struggling with frozen shoulder or bursitis, I’d love to help. Book a consultation or learn more at Young Chiropractic, Wembley.
